Irvine Valley's athlete of the week for Jan. 29, the second week in a row and third time this season is standout sophomore women's basketball player Makena Tomlinson.
The star post player scored 27 points with 15 rebounds as the No. 14 in the state Lasers defeated Saddleback, 72-55, in an Orange Empire Conference game at home last Friday.
Tomlinson shot 11 of 15 from the field in the victory. Irvine Valley improved its record to 14-6 overall and 5-1 in the OEC.
She also had 13 points and seven rebounds in Irvine Valley's 71-47 conference win at Cypress last Wednesday.
Irvine Valley has won five games in a row and sits in second place in conference, a game behind Orange Coast.
On the season, Tomlinson is averaging a team-leading 12.3 points and shooting 49.3 percent from the field. She also averages a team-best 9.8 rebounds.
Tomlinson has scored in double figures in 15 games this season. And she has scored 70 total points in Irvine Valley's last three wins.
IVC is back at home on Wednesday, hosting Riverside in a conference game at 6 p.m.
