Irvine Valley's athlete of the week for Oct. 16 is freshman men's soccer player Armon Haghighat.
The former University High star, had two goals and one assist last week as the Lasers scored a 2-2 draw at Santa Ana Tuesday and then a 4-1 victory over Stantiago Canyon at home Friday.
The forward now has three goals and two assists on the year.
At Santa Ana on Tuesday, Haghighat scored the first goal of the game. Sophomore foward Grant Miller found Haghighat and he finished to give the Lasers a 1-0 lead in what ended up being a draw.
Haghighat was all over the field last Friday as the Lasers scored early and often. After a Miller goal on a header from sophomore forward Ivan Lopez in the ninth minute, Haghighat found the back of the net on a strike from sophomore defender Gabriel Velasco to put IVC ahead, 2-0, in the 11th minute.
Haghighat finished his point total on the day by feeding Miller for another header goal in the 53rd minute.
He had 17 goals and nine assists in a standout season for University High during the 2022-23 season. Haghighat ranked seventh in CIF SS Division 5 with 43 points, 10th in goals and 15th in assists.
The Lasers play again on Tuesday, hosting Cypress in an Orange Empire Conference match at 6 p.m.
