Volleyball team set to take on Bakersfield in second round

The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team starts the California Community College Athletic Association So. Cal. Regional Playoffs on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. with a home match against Bakersfield.

Bakersfield has a record of 14-9 overall and went 9-3 to tie for second in the Western State Conference-South Division.

No. 15 Bakersfield defeated El Camino, 25-18, 25-15, 29-27, last Saturday night at home to open up the playoffs.

Tori Robertson and Aubree Dees each finished with 11 kills and Alexandria Johnson added 10 kills to lead the way for the Renegades.

Bakersfield hit an impressive .394 as a team in the contest.

Kya Jones finished with 24 digs and Johnson chipped in 21 digs.

Monet Panther ran the offense with 30 assists. On the year, Johnson averages 3.14 kills and 3.67 digs per set. Jones is averaging 4.81 digs and Panther averages 6.53 assists per set for Bakersfield.

Irvine Valley won the Orange Empire Conference and is the No. 2 seed in the So. Cal. Regional Playoffs.

Irvine Valley, ranked No. 9 in the state in the final regular-season poll, swept Santiago Canyon, 25-10, 25-12, 25-15, last week.

It was Irvine Valley's ninth sweep in its last 10 matches and improved the team's record to 19-4 overall and 15-1 in conference.

Sophomore outside hitter Angelina Griego and sophomore middle blocker Kendall Fraser led the way with nine kills each.

Griego also had a team-best six digs.

Sophomore outside hitters Chloe Swanson and Emily Hon added five kills apiece and freshman middle blocker Avery Bennett contributed three kills and three blocks.

The Lasers hit .431 as a team.

On the year, freshman outside hitter Tessa Marocco is averaging 4.14 kills and 2.67 digs per set. Sophomore opposite Jayli Nealy averages 4.01 kills and is hitting .309 on the year.

Sophomore libero Gabi Brown averages 3.70 digs and sophomore setter Maddie Harkey is averaging 7.96 assists for the Lasers.

The winner of tonight's match will take on either Santa Ana or Canyons on Saturday.
