Women's volleyball team comes back with a big victory

The Irvine Valley women's team responded from its first defeat of the season with a big-time performance on Saturday afternoon.

The Lasers, ranked No. 6 in the state in the first California Community College Women's Volleyball Coaches Association Poll of the year, took down No. 2 San Diego Mesa, 25-19, 21-25, 25-23, 18-25, 15-13, on the road.

Irvine Valley, which lost to MiraCosta in five sets on Wednesday on the road, improved its record to 3-1 overall. San Diego Mesa lost its second straight and slipped to 5-3 overall.

Freshman opposite Jayli Nealy finished with 22 kills and two blocks and hit .500. Freshman outside hitter Tasha Mae ended with 13 kills and eight digs, freshman outside hitter Jaclyn Sanchez added 12 kills and 15 digs and freshman middle blocker Kendall Fraser had six kills.

Freshman setter Maddie Harkey ran the offense with 47 assists and sophomore libero Alexandra Pestolis had a team-high 19 digs and chipped in six assists.

Irvine Valley plays again next Friday, opening up Orange Empire Conference play at Santiago Canyon at 6 p.m.
