Women's basketball defeats Fullerton on Coaches vs. Cancer Night

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team held a successful Coaches vs. Cancer Night Tuesday to help support the American Cancer Society.

The Lasers also had success on the floor.

Irvine Valley used a big second quarter to pull away and then defeated Fullerton, 65-46, in an Orange Empire Conference contest.

The Lasers, ranked No. 12 in the state, improved their record to 18-7 overall and 9-2 in conference. Fullerton went to 13-12 overall and 4-7 in conference.

IVC trailed, 17-15, after the first quarter, but outscored Fullerton, 29-11, in the second quarter and took a 44-28 lead into the half.

Irvine Valley also won the third quarter, 15-10, to head into the final 10 minutes with a 59-38 advantage.

The Lasers made 12 of 20 shots from the field and 5 of 7 from three-pointer range in the second quarter to take control.

In the quarter, sophomore wing Christen Ziska finished with eight points, freshman guard Moka Saiki chipped in seven points and freshman guard Avril Ho had five points for the Lasers to lead the way.

For the game, Ziska finished with 14 points, six rebounds and two assists, Saiki had 13 points, six rebounds and three steals and sophomore guard Emily Freeman added 12 points and three steals.

Sophomore forward Ella Will contributed seven points and seven rebounds off the bench.

Fullerton was paced by Jasmine Arnold with nine points and Xochitl Hood with eight points and 10 rebounds.

Irvine Valley plays again on Thursday, hosting Cypress at 7 p.m. It is Sophomore Night for the Lasers.
