Women's basketball has tough, up-coming game against RCC

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team, which moved up to No. 12 in the state this week in the coaches poll, hosts Riverside at 6 p.m. in an Orange Empire Conference game Wednesday night.

The Lasers have a record of 14-6 overall and are 5-1 in the OEC.

In conference play, Irvine Valley is on a five-game win streak.

It defeated Saddleback, 72-55, at home last Friday night.

The Lasers had two players with at least 20 points and pulled away in the second half for the win. Sophomore post player Makena Tomlinson led the way with 27 points and 15 rebounds for IVC.

She made 11 of 15 shots from the field in 36 minutes. Sophomore wing Christen Ziska added 20 points and nine rebounds and freshman guard Moka Saiki contributed eight rebounds, five assists and six steals for the Lasers.

On the season, Tomlinson is averaging 12.3 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. Ziska averages 11.5 points, Saiki is averaging 11.2 points and 2.0 steals and Freeman is averaging 9.3 points per game.

Tomlinson leads the way in rebounding at 9.5 per game with Ziska at 4.6 per game.

Freshman guard Haruka Mikuma paces the squad in assists per game at 3.5.

Riverside enters tonight's match-up with an 11-8 record overall and a 4-2 mark in the OEC.

The Tigers have won two straight games.

They defeated Cypress, 52-38, last Friday at home. Antieya Brown finished with a game-high 19 points, 18 rebounds and four blocks. Janara Williams added 11 points, 16 rebounds and four assists and Keila Esau contributed seven points and six rebounds for RCC.

Brown ranks fifth in the conference in scoring at 17.6 points per game and third in rebounds at 14.1 per game. Also on the year, Williams is averaging 16.8 points and 14.7 rebounds (second in conference) per game. Nave'ah Pina is averaging 10.5 points and Brooks averages 7.4 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game for the Tigers.  

Irvine Valley plays again on Friday at Orange Coast at 6 p.m.
