Six straight wins for women's basketball to open the season

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team continued its impressive start to the season.

The Lasers, ranked No. 13 in the state and fifth in Southern California, went on the road to El Camino and defeated the Warriors, 85-37, Tuesday night on the road as part of the El Camino Crossover.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 6-0 overall.

IVC was led by sophomore guard Emily Freeman with 20 points.

She made 7 of 12 shots from the floor, including 5 of 10 from three-point range. She added five assists and two steals in the Laser win.

Freshman guard Aryana Cortes had her best game of the season with 14 points, four rebounds and two steals.

Sophomore post player Makena Tomlinson added 12 points and three steals, sophomore center Daphne Rudis scored 11 points and had four rebounds and three assists and freshman guard Moka Saiki chipped in 10 points, six assists, three steals and two blocks in the victory.

The Lasers out-scored El Camino, 24-8, in the second quarter to take the lead for good.

IVC led, 42-22, at the half and then put the game away in second half by out-scoring the Warriors, 43-15.

Irvine Valley shot 31 of 65 (47.7 percent) for the game, made 13 three-pointers and had 26 assists on 31 made baskets.

The squad plays again next Tuesday with a game against Long Beach City at home at 5:30 p.m.
