Former Irvine Valley women's basketbal player Katie Nguyen played a big part in a solid season for the NAIA Westcliff University women's basketball team in 2022-23.
Nguyen started 26 games for the Warriors and averaged 5.5 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game. Westcliff finished with a record of 16-12 overall.
Westcliff saw its season end with a tough, 63-50 loss to the top team in the California Pacific Conference, the University of Antelope Valley.
The junior guard scored a season-high 17 points in Westcliff's three-point win over La Sierra in late December.
At Irvine Valley, Nguyen was named an Orange Empire Conference Character Champion winner for the 2021-22 school year.
She helped IVC win its fourth straight OEC title in 2021-22. The Lasers went 12-0 in conference and finished the year with a mark of 26-3 overall. Irvine Valley reached the semifinals of the California Community College Athletic Association State Championships.
IVC fell in the semifinals to San Joaquin Delta in a close game, 77-74, at West Hills Lemoore in March 2022.
Nguyen averaged 3.3 points, 6.4 rebounds, which ranked fourth on the team, and, 1.5 steals per game for the Lasers on the year.
She contributed off of the court as well, volunteering as a student aid at a Vietnamese langue school in Orange County and with youth basketball programs.
Nguyen was also a Dean's List Associate of Science for Transfer and a scholar athlete at IVC.
