It is Coaches vs. Cancer game night for women's basketball

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team hosts Santa Ana on an important night Friday at 6 p.m.

It is Irvine Valley's annual Coaches vs. Cancer game with all donations heading to the American Cancer Society.

The Lasers, ranked No. 17 in the state, have a record of 17-7 overall and and 5-3 and in a tie for third place in the Orange Empire Conference.

Irvine Valley defeated Golden West on the road, 86-43, on Wednesday. It was the second time this season that IVC beat the Rustlers by 43 points.

Freshman point guard Trasara Alexander finished with 17 points, eight rebounds and three steals in the win.

Four players scored in double figures for IVC.

Freshmen guards Emily Freeman and Christen Ziska each chipped in 12 points and sophomore guard Kaila Truby contributed 12 points, five rebounds and five assists.

On the season so far, Alexander is averaging 14.9 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game.

In conference games, Alexander leads in both points and rebounds (21.4 and 10.3).

Sophomore guard Kennedy Pucci averages 9.0 points and 3.9 rebounds, Freeman is averaging 8.4 points and sophomore forward Giselle Martinez is averaging 7.6 points and 4.5 rebounds a game for the Lasers.

Santa Ana is coming off of a 65-56 defeat to Riverside at home on Wednesday.

The Dons' record slipped to 8-14 overall and 3-5 in the Orange Empire Conference.

Selena Hernandez led Santa Ana with 21 points, including five three-pointers and five rebounds.

Sophia Escalante added 19 points to go with eight rebounds and Brianna Urena had a season-high nine assists on the night.

On the year, Hernandez is one of the top scorers in conference, averaging 19.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Escalante averages 11.3 points and 4.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game for the Dons.

And the Lasers are back in action next Wednesday at Riverside at 5 p.m.
