Women's basketball team loses first game of '22-23 campaign

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team's undefeated run to open the 2022-23 season came to an end Saturday night at home in the final game of the IVC Crossover Classic.

The Lasers lost to Moorpark, 54-43. IVC's record went to 9-1 overall. Moorpark improved to 6-4 overall with the victory.

Irvine Valley fell behind, 30-21, at the end of the first half, and were down by as many as 17 midway through the third quarter before rallying.

The Lasers got within 42-35, by the end of the third, but had trouble scoring consistently all night long against the Raiders.

The Lasers got as close as five points (42-37) with 6:38 left in the fourth quarter on a layup by sophomore guard Kaila Truby. But Moorpark scored four points in a row after to put the game out of reach.

IVC shot 35.4 percent (17 of 48) from the field as a team in the game, 4 of 13 from three-point range (30.8 percent) and 5 of 12 (41.7 percent) from the free throw line.

Freshman guard Emily Freeman finished with eight points and sophomore guard Kennedy Pucci, freshman guard Trasara Alexander and sophomore guard Kaila Truby each added seven points for IVC.

Truby also had five rebounds.

Moorpark was pced by Sabrina Belquist with 17 points, five rebounds and fi e assists and Jasmine Nichols had 12 points and eight rebounds.

Irvine Valley is back in action at the Moorpark Tournament next Thursday. It plays San Joquin Delta at 1 p.m.
