Women's basketball team falls in regional final at Ventura

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team's season saw its special 2019-20 season come to a close on Saturday night in a California Community College Athletic Association South Regional Playoff Final.

The Lasers trailed by 20 points late, but rallied hard before falling, 70-67 at Ventura.

Ventura, seeded third, moves on to the CCCAA State Championship.

The Lasers, seeded No. 6 in the South Regional, shot just 29.5 percent (23 of 78) in the contest. Ventura shot 45.6 percent (31 of 68) as a team.

Freshman guard Jessica Suruor and sophomore guard Anai Washington each had 17 points for the Lasers. Washington also had 11 rebounds and Suruor had six rebounds for IVC.

Freshman guard Danielle Silva came off the bench with 15 points. She made 5 of 10 three-pointers.

Sophomore center Zoe Stachowski chipped in nine points, 16 rebounds and two steals. Freshman point guard Morgan Higgins added eight assists and five steals for IVC.

Irvine Valley trailed, 57-41, heading into the fourth quarter, and Ventura was ahead, 65-50, with 5:55 to play, but the Lasers battled back.

They pulled within 69-63 on a layup by Washington with 1:12 to play and got within 69-65 after another Washington basket with just under a minute left.

Ventura took a 70-65 advantage with 49 seconds remaining on a free throw by Cece Quintino.

IVC had chances at three three-pointers down the stretch, but couldn't connect. Stachowski tipped in a shot at the buzzer for the final score.

Irvine Valley, which had been ranked as high as No. 4 in the state this season, ends its year with a record of 25-3 overall. The Lasers won their third straight Orange Empire Conference title.
