Women's basketball team takes title, wins at Riverside, 84-73

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team wrapped up a third Orange Empire Conference title in a row with a 84-73 win on the road at Riverside on Thursday night.

IVC earned at least a share of the title with two games still to be played next week.

It was the 11th win in a row for the Lasers, who are ranked No. 5 in this week's state poll.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 22-2 overall and 10-0 in conference. Riverside went to 13-10 overall and 5-5 in conference.

Riverside gave Irvine Valley fits the first time the two teams played at IVC earlier this month.

But Thursday's game on the road was a different story from the start.

The Lasers jumped out to a 24-13 lead after the first quarter and were up, 47-32, at the half.

Riverside cut into the IVC lead in the third quarter, pulling to within four points on two occasions in the period.

But the Lasers took a 58-51 lead heading into the final quarter and closed the game out from there.

A layup by sophomore post player Zoe Stachowski gave IVC a 72-59 cushion with 6:40 left.

Another layup by Stachowski gave IVC a 83-69 advantage with 2:16 to play.

Riverside didn't get closer than 10 points the rest of the way.

Stachowski led the charge for IVC. She finished with 25 points, 18 rebounds, three assists and three steals in 39 minutes.

Sophomore guard Anai Washington added 21 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists and freshman guard Morgan Higgins had 19 points and six rebounds in the win.

Irvine Valley shot just 38.8 percent (26 of 67) from the field, but out-rebounded Riverside, 54-39, and had 18 assists on their 26 made baskets.

The Lasers also got to the free throw line 40 times in the game, making 27 attempts.

Irvine Valley plays again next Tuesday, hosting Cypress in a conference game at 5 p.m.
