Men's volleyball team earns its biggest win of the season

Irvine Valley started Orange Empire Conference play with a bang on Wednesday night.

The Lasers, ranked No. 4 in the state, defeated No. 2 Golden West, 22-25, 25-21, 27-29, 26-24, 15-13, to earn its biggest victory of the season so far.

Irvine Valley handed Golden West just its second loss of the season.

IVC improved its record to 7-4 overall and 1-0 in conference, while Golden West went to 10-2 overall and 0-1 in the OEC.

The Lasers rallied to take the final two sets for the important win.

Irvine Valley hit .280 (56-21-125) as a team on the night and got big performances from among freshman setter and opposite Grant Dvorak, sophomore opposite Damon Kooiman, freshman middle blocker Riley Hurdiss, freshman libero Domenic Marquez and sophomore setter Nick Hinker in the win.

Dvorak finished with 14 kills, hit .407 and added 25 assists and seven digs to lead the Lasers.

Kooiman aded 12 kills, sophomore outside hitters Matt Reid and Zach McEntire each added eight kills anbd Hurdiss had eight kills, hit .571 and contributed six blocks.

Marquez ended with seven digs, freshman middle blocker Drake Goering had six kills and Hinker helped run the offense with 20 assists.

Irvine Valley plays its second conference match of the season on Friday at home at 6 p.m. against Santiago Canyon.
