Men's volleyball team holds on to beat Miramar in five sets

It wasn't always pretty, but the Irvine Valley's men's volleyball team ended up taking care of business on Monday night at home.

The Lasers, ranked No. 5 in the state, defeated No. 9 Miramar, 25-20, 25-27, 17-25, 25-21, 18-16.

The match was a make-up from a contest that didn't happen at Miramar last week.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 6-2 overall, while Miramar went to 4-4 overall.

For Irvine Valley, freshman setter and outside hitter Grant Dvorak finished with 14 kills, hit .481 and had 27 assists and five digs.

Sophomore outside hitter Damon Kooiman ended with 13 kills and four digs, sophomore outside hitter Matt Reid had 11 kills, hit .391 and freshman middle blocker Giovanni Flowers contributed 10 kills, hit .438 and three blocks.

Sophomore setter Nick Hinker also had 27 assists for the Lasers and freshman libero Domenic Marquez had seven digs.

In a back and forth match throughout, IVC closed out the fith and final set with a block by Dvorak.

Miramar was led by Noah Lim with 23 kills and eight digs and Jeremy Pineda with 43 assists and 18 digs.

Irvine Valley plays again on Wednesday, hosting No. 2 in the state San Diego Mesa at 6 p.m.
