The Irvine Valley men's volleyball team is off to a 7-1 start and is ranked No. 1 in the state in this week's California Community College Men's Volleyball Coaches State Poll.
IVC defeated No. 6 Miramar, 25-19, 25-23, 25-19 on Wednesday at home in a quick one hour and 16 minutes.
Sophomore opposite Demetre Gossett ended with nine kills and freshman outside hitters Zach McEntire and Damon Kooiman each had seven kills.
Freshman setter Kaina Alvarez ended with 24 assists and sophomore libero Adam Schulte had nine digs.
So far this season, Gossett is averaging 4.03 kills per set and hitting.358 to lead the way. Kooiman averages 2.45 kills and McEntire verages 2.06 kills per set.
Sophomore middle blocker Julio Gutierrez is averaging 1.45 kills and hitting a team-best .468. Alvarez is averaging 7.90 assists and Schulte averages 3.97 digs per set.
Gossett leads the state in kills per set and is second in total kills (125) and third in hitting percentage. Schulte is pacing the state in digs per set and total digs (123). And Alvarez is fifth in the state in assists per set.
Grossmont has a record of 0-9 overall.
The Griffins were swept by Golden West, 25-23, 25-18, 25-21 on Wednesday at GWC.
Grossmont's previous match was a 3-2 loss to Santiago Canyon at home.
Aaron Knudsen had 29 kills and Jaden Tatad finished with 49 assists.
On the year, Knudsen leads the squad, averaging 3.79 kills per set. Tatad averages 7.56 assists per set and Jose Pina Garcia is averaging 2.71 digs.
Irvine Valley plays again next Friday at Palomar at 6 p.m.
The Lasers then start Orange Empire Conference play the following week with a showdown against rival Orange Coast at home on Mar. 15.
