Men's volleyball team hosts undefeated Moorpark on Tuesday

Irvine Valley's men's volleyball team was tested on Saturday against two of the top programs in the state.

The Lasers passed with flying colors, defeating Long Beach City in five sets and then El Camino in three sets at the John Altobelli Memorial Quad event at Orange Coast.

IVC improved its record to 3-0 overall and remained one of two undefeated teams in the state so far.

Irvine Valley will play the other undefeated squad, Moorpark, on Tuesday at home at 6 p.m.

Moorpark has swept all three of its opponents (Golden West, Fullerton and Santiago Canyon).

The Raiders defeated both Fullerton and Santiago Canyon at the Santiago Canyon crossover event last Friday.

Moorpark defeated the Hawks, 25-23, 25-17, 25-23, to end the day.

In its 25-20, 25-14, 25-11 victory over Fullerton earlier on Friday, Oliver Herron and Jakob Omberget each had eight kills and Eddy He finished with 26 assists.

Irvine Valley took down Long Beach City in five sets (25-23, 16-25, 25-22, 12-25, 15-12) and then swept El Camino (25-19, 25-18, 25-15) last Saturday at OCC.

Sophomore opposite Demetre Gossett led the Lasers in the win over LBCC with 18 kills, five aces and six digs.

Freshmen outside hitters Damon Kooiman and Zach McEntire each added nine kills, setter freshman setter Kaina Alverez ran the offense with 37 assists and sophomore libero Adam Schulte contributed 16 digs.

Gossett had another double-digit kill performance with 10 kills against El Camino. He hit .368 in the contest.

Freshman outside hitter Matt Reid added six kills and hit .857 and sophomore middle blocker Julie Gutierrez chipped in five kills and hit .714.

Kooiman had five kills, 11 digs and two blocks, Schulte ended with 16 digs and Alvarez finished with 17 assists in the win for Irvine Valley.

After Tuesday night's match, IVC will have eight days off from action. They play again on Wednesday, Feb. 15 against Santa Barbara City at 5 p.m. at home.
