Men's volleyball team captures fourth straight, sweeps Palomar

Irvine Valley's men's volleyball team rolled to its fourth straight win with a 27-25, 25-14, 25-23 Pacific Coast Athletic Conference victory over Palomar at home on Friday afternoon.

It was also Irvine Valley's third three-set sweep of an opponent this season.

The Lasers improved their record to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in conference.

Irvine Valley led for most of the way in the first game. The Lasers were up, 24-23, when Palomar scored two straight points.

A kill by David McGuire put the Comets in front, 25-24.

But IVC came back with three straight points to take the set.

Sophomore middle blocker Kevin Dell had a kill to tie it at 25-25.

Then sophomore outside hitter Josh Schmidt's roll shot for a winner gave IVC set point at 26-25.

The set ended on a lift called on Palomar.

Irvine Valley cruised in the second set.

The Lasers scored the first three points and 12 of the first 15 points.

A kill by freshman outside hitter Peter Van Liefde put Irvine Valley in front, 13-4.

Irvine Valley took its largest lead of the set at 24-11 after two hitting errors by Palomar and three kills by sophomore outside hitter Trey Bernal.

A solo block by freshman middle blocker Robert Ryley later finished off the set.

The Lasers won a tight third set.

IVC went ahead, 23-21, on a kill by Bernal. Palomar answered with a kill by Kyle Bass to make it a one-point game.

A hitting error by Palomar gave IVC match point at 24-22 and two points later sophomore outside hitter Cole Murray ended the match with a big kill.

Murray paced the Lasers with 10 kills. He hit .300 in the match and also added five digs and five aces.

Bernal finished with seven kills and five digs, Schmidt and Dell each contributed six kills. Sophomore libero Billy Crow had 10 digs.

Sophomore Arek Halaj and freshman Jake Adams shared setting duties with Halaj ending with 19 assists and five digs and Adams adding 13 assists and five digs.

Irvine Valley hit .232 as a team.

The Lasers play at Grossmont on Wednesday in a conference match and then host Miramar on Friday in another conference match.

Irvine Valley already swept Miramar earlier this year on the road.
