The Irvine Valley men's tennis team finished the first round of Orange Empire Conference action with a 8-1 loss to Riverside at home on Thursday.
Riverside is ranked No. 2 in Southern California and improved its record to 14-0 overall and 5-0 in conference.
Irvine Valley's record dropped to 3-7 overall and 3-2 in conference. The Lasers remained in third place in the standings behind Riverside and Cypress.
The Lasers picked up their lone win of the day at No. 6 singles with freshman Stuart Webb defeating Brandon Moerer, 7-5, 3-6, (10-8).
But freshman Thallys Santos also played tough at No. 3 singles and was just edged, 7-5, 6-4, by Riverside's Elie-Noe Nicolay.
IVC's No. 1 doubles team of freshman Alvaro Mantilla and Santos and No. 3 team of freshmen Jacob Holiday and Li also competed well, but each dropped 8-4 decisions.
Irvine Valley is back in action on Tuesday, hosting Saddleback at 2 p.m. The Lasers defeated the Gauchos, 9-0, to begin conference.
