Irvine Valley's men's soccer team had quite a run at the Hartnell Tournament last weekend.

The Lasers won two of three matches and nearly ended up taking all three. They still went undefeated in the event.

Irvine Valley beat American River, 3-2, on Friday, tied Fresno City, 3-3, on Saturday and then beat Lake Tahoe, 3-2, on Sunday.

The two wins and a tie improved Irvine Valley's record to 2-0-2 overall.

IVC tied at Glendale in its opening match of the 2015 season a week earlier.

"We've done well so far," Irvine Valley men's soccer coach Martin McGrogan said. "Offensively we have some threats. Toby Waterman has four goals, Jose Rivera has scored two and Connor Elder has two. And Kendrick Nguyen has created a lot of chances.  Defensively, we still have some things to tighten up. But we are a young team with only a few sophomores so we are still working at it."

Irvine Valley got two goals from Waterman in the 2-1 win over American River last Friday. His second goal was assisted by Sebastian Piema.

Sophomore keeper Manual Zamora finished with six saves.

IVC led Fresno City, 3-0, on Saturday.

Rivera scored in the 20th minute on an assist from Waterman.

Then Elder got loose and scored off an assist from sophomore defender Cesar Ortiz early in the second half to make it a 2-0 game.

Three minutes later, freshman Marcos Cervantes scored off a pass from freshman midfielder Alan McTiernan to give IVC a 3-0 lead.

But Fresno City rallied with goals in the 74th, 80th and 85th minutes to earn the draw.

"We had every chance to win it," McGrogan said.

Irvine Valley bounced back with a nice 3-2 win over Lake Tahoe on Sunday to wrap up the tournament.

Waterman scored off an assist from Nguyen in the 10th minute to give Irvine Valley the early lead.

After a Lake Tahoe goal in the 20th minute, IVC took a 2-1 advantage in the 24th minute off a goal by Rivera. McTiernan picked up the assist.

Lake Tahoe sent the game into halftime knotted at 2-2, after scoring in the 40th minute.

Irvine Valley's Elder found the back of the net with the lone goal of the second half. His goal in the 66th minute gave IVC the victory.

Zamora ended up with four saves in 70 minutes of action and freshman Hagen Truniger had one save in 20 minutes for the Lasers.

IVC plays again on Wednesday, hosting Moorpark at 3 p.m.
