Men's basketball team closes out 2022-23 season Thursday

The Irvine Valley men's basketball team closes out the 2022-23 season on Thursday with a home game against Cypress at 6 p.m.

Coach Jerry Hernandez takes on former IVC associate head coach Andrew Alhadeff in the finale of the year for the Lasers.

Irvine Valley enters the contest with a record of 5-22 overall and 1-14 in conference.

Cypress is still fighting for a playoff spot. The Chargers are 16-11 overall and 9-6 in the OEC and in a four-way tie for second place with Santiago Canyon, Orange Coast and Saddleback.

Irvine Valley picked up its first Orange Empire Conference win of the season on Wednesday, downing Golden West, 73-67.

Sophomore post player Charlie Henderson led the Lasers with 21 points and eight rebounds.

Freshman guard Luke Farrington added 14 points, five rebounds and four assists and freshman wing player Marcus Carter contributed 11 points.

Freshman forward Jordan Montrose also had nine points for IVC.

The Lasers shined on the offensive end, shooting a season-best 56.9 percent (29 of 51) as a team and dished out 18 assists.

On the season, Henderson is averaging 13.4 points, 9.9 rebounds and 1.4 blocks, Farrington averages 8.7 points and Carter is averaging 6.7 points for the Lasers.

Cypress is coming off of a tough, 87-61 loss at home Tuesday to Santiago Canyon.

Grant Sii led the Chargers with 22 points, Allen Wright contributed 12 points and three rebounds and Hadi Essayli scored six points and chipped in seven rebounds.

But the Chargers are dangerous.

On the year, Blake Ballard is averaging 14.3 points, Sii averages 12.9 points and Essayli is averaging 11.3 points, shooting 52.6 percent from the field, and averages 11.0 rebounds, which leads the OEC.

Wright is averaging 10.9 points and 4.8 rebounds for the Cypress inside.
