Men's basketball team starts 2022-23 season with a strong win

The Irvine Valley men's basketball team started the 202-23 season with a solid victory Tuesday night over Cuyamaca at home.

IVC coach Jerry Hernandez had his team ready on the way to a 60-46 win.

The Lasers were ahead, 36-23, at the break and had control throughout the second half.

IVC freshman Roman Swizek led the way from the start.

Swizek scored 23 points on 10 of 12 shooting from the floor and added five rebounds, two assists and one steal in 28 minutes.

"He did and outstanding job of reading Cuyamaca's defense," Hernandez said. "He shot spot threes, short jumpers and attacked the rim when he had the opportunity. it was a great game by him."

Irvine Valley ended up shooting 48.1 percent from the field as a team and held Cuyamaca to just 38.2 percent from the field and 16.7 from three-point range.

Sophomore forward Charlie Henderson added 10 points and five rebounds for the Lasers and freshman forward Ethan McCanless had six points, a team-high eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks in the win.

Irvine Valley plays again on Thursday, Nov. 10 as it hosts Canyons at 6 p.m. as part of the IVC Crossover Classic.
