Baseball team scores early and often in 11-0 win over Vikings

Irvine Valley's baseball team shut out West LA, 11-0, Tuesday afternoon at home.

The Lasers scored 10 runs in the first four innings on the way to their second win of the season.

IVC moved to 2-1 overall and West LA went to 1-3.

Irvine Valley got it going early.

In the first inning, freshman left fielder Chase Quezada scored on a wild pitch and then freshman first baseman Shaun McCaghren hit a sacrifice fly to put the Lasers in front, 2-0.

Sophomore center fielder Shane Stafford, walked, moved to second, stole third and then scored on a throwing error by the West LA catcher.

Irvine Valley scored three more runs in the third inning.

Stafford led off with a home run to right center and then McCaghren followed with another solo shot over the left field fence to make it a 5-0 IVC lead.

Sophomore second baseman Conner Hoskinson drove in the Lasers' third run of the inning with a groundout.

Irvine Valley put the game away in the bottom of the fourth inning with four runs to go ahead, 10-0.

Quezada had an RBI single, freshman third baseman Gavin Grutzmacher hit a two-run homerun and freshman designated hitter Nomar Vasquez hit a sacrifice fly.

Stafford finished Irvine Valley's scoring with another homerun to right center.

All the while, Irvine Valley got a standout performance on the mound from sophomore right-hander Chris Cody. He picked up his first win of the season by going seven innings and giving up just three hits with no walks and striking out three.

Sophomore righty Cole Dietsch and freshman left-hander Matthew Wilson each pitched an inning to close out the game.

At the plate, Stafford went 2 for 3 with two home runs, four runs scored and two walks.

McCaghren hit a home run, had two RBI and walked once.

Quezada and Murray each finished with two hits. Quezada also had two runs, one one walk and one RBI.

And Grutzmacher had one hit, including that home run, two runs scored, one walk and one RBI.

Irvine Valley plays again on Friday, hosting San Diego City at 1 p.m.
