Baseball team sweeps Golden West to close out 2023 season

Irvine Valley might ave had an up and down season and a mostly rough Orange Empire Conference campaign, but the Lasers ended the year with three straight victories.

IVC finished off its sweep of Golden West with a 10-9 win in 11 innings on Friday on the road.

Sophomore left fielder Drew Porter, who had quite a series, scored on a passed ball in the top of the 11th inning and sophomore right-hander Ryan Barlow battled to finish off the Rustlers over the last three innings.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 13-27 overall and 3-18 in conference.

Irvine Valley had 15 hits for the second game in a row against Golden West and the top of the lineup did a ton of the damage.

IVC's first four batters of sophomore shortstop Nick Madole, freshman center fielder Shane Stafford, freshman third baseman Kevin James and sophomore designated hitter Adrian Reveles finished with eight hits, seven runs scored and seven RBI.

Madole went 2 for 6 with a double, Stafford was 2 for 4 with a walk, two stolen bases, three runs scored, a sacrifice fly and one RBI, James went 2 for 6 with a a triple, home run, three runs scored and four RBI and Reveles finished 2 for 6 with two RBI.

James hit a two-run triple in the top of the seventh inning to pull IVC within 7-6 and then Reveles tied the game with a run-scoring single.

And James blasted his team-leading ninth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the top of the ninth inning to give the Lasers a 9-7 lead. He finished the season with nine home runs and 35 RBI.

But Golden West responded with two runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game.

The contest stayed tied at 9-9 until the top of the 11th inning when the Lasers came up with a two-out rally. Porter walked and sophomore second baseman Nolan Cusey singled to center to put runners on first and third.

Porter then scored on the passed ball to put IVC ahead for good.

Golden West looked to tie the game in the bottom of the frame. The Rustlers had runners on first and second with one out, but Barlow got the next two batters to fly out and end IVC's season on a high note.

Barlow pitched three innings and gave up one run on one hit and one walk with two strikeouts to earn his second victory of the year.

Sophomore righty Sammy Murphy started the game and pitched 5.2 innings. He was unlucky in giving up six runs (none earned) on seven hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.

Also shining at the plate for Irvine Valley were sophomore first baseman Casey Kudell with two hits and sophomore catcher and Utah Tech commit Connor Tallakson with two hits and one RBI.
