Irvine Valley set to host CCCAA beach state championship

Irvine Valley excited to host the California Community College Athletic Association State Championships Thursday through Saturday on its Laser beach courts.

The team competition will take place on Thursday beginning at 9 a.m.

The event will include two pools of teams that qualified through North and South regionals.

The first pool begins at 9 a.m. with Pool A consisting of South No. 1 Orange Coast, North No. 2 Feather River and South No. 4 San Diego Mesa.

Pool B will take place at appoximately 12 p.m. with North No. 1 Cabrillo, South No. 2 Irvine Valley and South No. 3 El Camino.

The schedule of matches is:

9 a.m. – Orange Coast vs San Diego Mesa
10 a.m. – Cabrillo vs. El Camino
11 a.m. – Feather River vs. San Diego Mesa
12 p.m. – Irvine Valley vs. El Camino
1 p.m. – Orange Coast vs. Feather River
2 p.m. – Cabrillo vs. Irvine Valley

The winners of the two pools will play at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday for the state title.

The groupings feature the top teams in the state.

Orange Coast won its Western Division in the Orange Empire Conference and finished with a record of 16-0 overall.

Cabrillo captured the Coast Conference and has a record of 21-1 overall, having won 14 matches in a row. The Seahawks won the state title in 2018.

The second-ranked team from the North, Feather River, finished second in the Big 8 conference, but is on a roll, having won six matches in a row, including beating Fresno City and West Valley to reach the state event.

Irvine Valley is the No. 2 seed from the South. It lost to Orange Coast, 3-2, during the regular season, but has played well in the postseason and also qualified three pairs to the state championship on Friday.

IVC won the inaugural CCCAA title in 2015.

But El Camino and San Diego Mesa will also be teams to look out for.

El Camino, the No. 3 team from the South, captured its home regional, is 22-3 overall and has a 22-match win streak.

And San Diego Mesa might be the No. 4 team from the South, but the Olympians won the Cypress regional last week with two straight wins and have a record of 18-3 overall.

The pairs tournament will get underway on Friday at 9 a.m. with 12 duos from the North and 20 teams from the South.

From the North, the duo of Natalie Taggart and Corrine Williams from Sierra won the Big 8 Conference title and the team of Kylee Moore and Teresa Ochoa from Monterey Peninsula capturede the Coast Conference title.

In the South, IVC's teams of Jolie Rasmussen and Barett Nolan and Jaclyn Sanchez and Emily Guenter shared the Orange Empire Conference championship. 

Madison Bogle and Lexi Morris from Grossmont won the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference. Morris is a former pairs state champion, having won the title in 2019 in Chula Vista with teammate Ashlee Goycoochea.

El Camino's Lauren McCarthey and Fayth Rascon took the South Coast Conference title and Emma Crabbe and Kelissa Lemoine from Santa Barbara City won the Western State Conference championship.

Cabrillo brings four pairs into the state event with Sierra, Irvine Valley, Orange Coast and Ventura each having three pairs.
