Women's volleyball team rolls again, sweeps Santiago Canyon

Make it 32 straight set wins and another sweep for the top-ranked Irvine Valley women's volleyball team.

The Lasers had little trouble in defeating Santiago Canyon, 25-11, 25-11, 25-15, in an Orange Empire Conference match at home on Wednesday night.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 18-0 overall and 11-0 in conference.

Irvine Valley has swept 10 straight opponents and dropped just three sets all season (54-3).

The Lasers led from start to finish in each and every set on Wednesday.

IVC jumped out to a 16-8 lead in the opening set after a kill by sophomore outside hitter Lea Kruse.

It was 20-11 after a net violation by the Hawks.

Irvine Valley scored the final six points of the first set. Back-to-back kills by sophomore outside hitter Alaina Gendale wrapped up the set for the Lasers.

IVC took charge right away in the second set, taking a 11-2 lead on a kill by sophomore outside hitter Gabriela Griego.

An overpass kill by Gendale put the Lasers up, 13-3.

Irvine Valley went ahead, 15-3, on a kill by sophomore middle blocker Kristin Austin and cruised from there in the set.

A tip winner by sophomore opposite Jasmine Langle ended the set.

The third set was close to start. IVC led, 10-7, but then went on a 10-3 run to take a 20-10 advantage.

A kill by Langle gave Irvine Valley a 23-13 lead and three points later Irvine Valley closed the match out on a kill by freshman outside hitter Erin Findley off the block.

Griego had a nice night for the Lasers. She finished with 12 kills with just one error on 15 attempts (.733 hitting percentage). Griego added two blocks.

Gendale added 11 kills, Austin had five kills, Kruse chipped in four kills, nine digs and four aces in an all-around effort and sophomore libero Anna Unke showed her usual hustle with 11 digs.

Sophomore setter Truth Hafey, who leads the state in assists per set, ended with 30. She also had two kills and two digs.

Irvine Valley has a bye on Friday and plays again next Wednesday at home in a conference match against Riverside at 6 p.m.
