Women's volleyball team goes to 7-0 with win over MiraCosta

Irvine Valley's women's volleyball team took down its second straight ranked team in a row, beating MiraCosta in four sets at home on Friday night.

The Lasers, ranked No. 2 in the state stayed unbeaten with a 25-22, 25-18, 23-25, 25-20 victory over the No. 11 Spartans.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 7-0 overall, while MiraCosta's record slipped to 6-2 overall.

Irvine Valley got 14 kills each from sophomore outside hitters Lea Kruse and Gabriela Griego, nine kills from sophomore outside hitter Alaina Gendale and seven big kills and a spark off the bench late from freshman outside hitter Erin Finley in the win.

Kruse also had 21 digs with sophomore libero Anna Unke contributing 12 digs and freshman defensive specialist Lexie Pereira adding 10 digs.

Sophomore setter Truth Hafey, who leads the state in assists, had another solid match with 49 assists, three blocks and two digs.

The match was tight throughout.

It was tied at 16, 17 and 18 before Irvine Valley won three points in a row, including getting a kill from Kruse to go up, 21-18, in the opening set.

The Lasers took a 24-22 advantage on a kill by Griego and then Gendale put the first set away for IVC with a kill.

Irvine Valley slowly pulled away late in the second set. The Lasers took a 19-14 lead on a lift called by MiraCosta.

The Lasers went ahead, 20-16, on a block by Hafey and sophomore middle blocker Alma Entesari, and then took a 22-17 lead on a kill by Gendale.

A service winner by Unke made it 24-17 and two points later, a net call on MiraCosta gave Irvine Valley a 2-0 lead in sets.

MiraCosta made things interesting by winning the third set.

The Spartans took a 23-21 lead only to see IVC tie the score at 23 on a kill by Griego.

But Irvine Valley had a service error and a bad pass and MiraCosta got within 2-1.

Irvine Valley trailed, 7-6, in the fourth set, but then scored four consecutive points. Kruse had three kills over that stretch.

The score stayed close late with MiraCosta taking a 19-18 lead on a Irvine Valley serving error.

But a kill by Finley and then a kill by Griego put the Lasers back in front, 20-19.

The Spartans tied it at 20, but Irvine Valley scored the final five points of the match for the win.

Finley had two big kills, including a roll shot for a winner to put Irvine Valley ahead, 23-20. MiraCosta couldn't' get the ball over on three to bring IVC to set point and then sophomore middle blocker Kristin Austin slammed a kill on an overpass to end things.

Irvine Valley now moves into Orange Empire Conference action next Friday. The Lasers host Fullerton at 6 p.m.
