Women's tennis team holds on to second in conference with win

Irvine Valley's women's tennis team sweated out a 5-4 win over Fullerton in an Orange Empire Conference match on Thursday at home.

The win kept the Lasers, who are ranked No. 3 in Southern California by the ITA, in second place in the conference standings, one match ahead of Riverside.

IVC ends the regular season with a big match against No. 5 Riverside on Tuesday at home at 2 p.m. IVC topped Riverside, 5-4, on the road earlier this year.

Irvine Valley has a record of 11-3 overall and 7-2 in conference. Riverside is 6-3 in conference. Orange Coast already clinched the conference title. It has a record of 8-0 heading into next week's action.

Irvine Valley won two of three doubles matches to take an early lead over Fullerton on Thursday.

The No. 1 team of freshman Hlla Alajeely and sophomore Fiorella Dreux was first off the courts, beating Delaney Ashe and Briana Lovering, 8-1.

IVC also picked up a win from the No. 3 team of freshman Anna Krechetova and sophomore Lauren MacDonnell. The duo won, 8-4, over Mayumi Okubo and Lael Cardinal.

Then in singles, Irvine Valley earned a split, going 3-3. But it was enough for the overall win.

Dreux won, 7-5, 6-1, over Kelsi Salazar-Sarti at No. 2 singles, Krechetova came out on top, 6-1, 6-2, over Lovering at the third spot and freshman Abigail Perez defeated Okubo, 7-5, 6-2, at the fourth position to give Irvine Valley the victory.
