Women's soccer team runs out of time, falls to Fullerton

Irvine Valley's women's soccer team ran out of time in a 2-1 Orange Empire Conference loss to Fullerton at home on Tuesday afternoon.

The Lasers scored late and continued to pressure over the final minutes of the game, but couldn't find the equalizer in the defeat.

Irvine Valley's record slipped to 0-6-2 overall and 0-1-1 in conference play, while Fullerton improved its record to 5-1-0 overall and 2-0-0 in conference.

Neither team scored or even had great opportunities to find the back of the net in the first half.

Fullerton scored both of its goals within a five-minute span in the second half.

After being awarded a free kick just outside the box, Juliet Mata sent a perfectly-placed strike into the upper left corner to give Fullerton a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute.

The Hornets made it 2-0 in the 62nd minute when Brooke Morris scored on a lefty shot from 30-plus yards out after a loose ball rolled to her and she chipped IVC's keeper.

Irvine Valley found some rhythm offensively over the final 20 minutes of the contest.

Sophomore forward Brenda Chopin sent a free kick toward goal that Fullerton keeper Savannah Dyer knocked away and Chopin hit a left-footed shot that Dyer was able to coral.

Irvine Valley pulled within a goal at 2-1 when freshman forward Jade Stewart scored her fourth goal in the last three matches. She took a through ball from Chopin on the right side and beat Dyer with a high shot.

The Lasers continued to pressure, but couldn't score again. Sophomore defender Yvette Belman, Chopin, and sophomore forward Luci Bernal were among those that created opportunities in the final minutes.

IVC freshman keeper Marissa Banos ended up making three saves in goal.

Irvine Valley plays again on Friday, traveling to Orange Coast for another conference contest.
