Women's soccer team wins another

The Irvine Valley women's soccer team got ready for the start of Orange Empire Conference play with another impressive performance.

The Lasers defeated West Los Angeles, 3-0, at home on Friday.

The win improved IVC's record to 3-0-1 heading into conference next week.

"Today I was happy with the result," IVC Coach Joe Supe said. "We could have had a few more goals, but we worked hard and played well. This is what we wanted to see in preparation for the start of conference."

IVC opens conference on Tuesday with a home match against Fullerton at 3 p.m.

On Friday, Irvine Valley got one goal in the first half and then put the contest away with two more in the second half.

The Lasers could have had a lot more. They out-shot West LA, 28-0.

Sophomores Yasmin Hart, Desirae Santana, Madisen Hammonds and Kelly Cox and freshmen Tiana Salazar, Zuleyka Ruiz and Celina Chang were among those with opportunities in the opening half.

IVC got on the board after freshman Amanda George was taken down in the box. George took the penalty kick and beat the West LA keeper for a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute.

That is the way the game went into halftime.

It was more of the same for IVC in the second half with opportunity after opportunity on goal.

Irvine Valley made it a 2-0 game early in the half. Hammonds scored on a header off a cross from freshman Emely Portillo.

Portillo later hit the post with a long shot from the right side.

In the 64th minute, Salazar also hit the post with a shot. She recovered the ball and passed to sophomore Wendy Rendon in the middle of the box. Rendon found the back of the net with her shot to put IVC ahead, 3-0.

IVC's defense did the rest. Freshman Shannon Duffy was never challenged in goal.

"It was a good game for us," Supe said. "I got to play everyone and everyone did what we needed. I thought we did a good job of defending, restarting plays and organizing our attack."

West LA's record slipped to 0-3-1 overall.
