Women's golf team takes third at So. Cal. Regionals

Irvine Valley's women's golf team placed third at the Southern California Regionals that finished up on Tuesday at Temecula Creek Inn and Resort.

The Lasers led after the first day with a score of 338 on Monday, but were passed up by strong College of the Desert and College of the Canyons teams on the second day of the event on Tuesday.

As a result, Desert and Canyons were the two teams that moved on to the State Championships next week at Morro Bay.

Desert finished with a score of 665 to finish first. Canyons was second with 684. Irvine Valley came in at 686 and was just three strokes away from moving on as a team.

IVC sophomores Leleaga Meredith and Cindy Dang did qualify for the state as individuals for the second year in row.

Canyons moved from fourth to second on the final day of play to qualify, while Desert moved from third to first. 

In the individual competition, Lexandra So of Citrus posted the lowest score in both rounds (75T/73) to finish first with a total of 148.

Meredith of Irvine Valley (155) finished second, while Rina Tomihani of Saddleback was third (157).

Meredith shot 75 the first day and 80 on the second day.

Dang came in eighth with a total of 164 (80/84).

IVC's Rebecca Peng also played well, placing 16th with a score of 174. She had scores of 88 and 86.

After day one, Irvine Valley College led all teams with a total score of 338.

IVC was followed closely by Fullerton (343) and Desert (344), while Canyons (349), Palomar (377) and Santa Barbara (378) rounded out the team scoring.

After day one in the individual competition, Meredith and So were tied at 75 after the first 18 holes. Kacy Kaichi from Fullerton (76) and Rina Tomihari from Saddleback (77) were the only other players to shoot in the 70s.

The State championships will be held at Morro Bay Golf Course on November 16-17 with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. each day.
