Women's golf team goes 6-2 at Diamond Bar conference match

The Irvine Valley women's golf team score of 343 at the Orange Empire Conference match on Wednesday at Diamond Bar Golf Course earned the team six wins and kept the Lasers in second place in the standings.

College of the Desert continued its undefeated streak with a team score of 322.

Host Fullerton College, runner-up at last year's state tournament, finished in second place with a score of 336.

In taking second, Fullerton closed the gap in conference standings. The Hornets now trail the Lasers by just one match for second place.

The event was played for the first time this conference season at a longer distance of 6,001 yards.

Irvine Valley's top player was sophomore Leleaga Meredith, who finished with nine pars and nine bogeys for a score of 82.

Freshman Rebecca Peng used eight pars, nine bogeys and a double bogey to score 84.

Sophomore Cindy Dang had one birdie, seven pars, seven bogeys and a double bogey for her score of 85 for IVC.

Freshman Liliana Gutierrez  used five pars, seven bogeys, five double bogeys and a triple bogey for the final team score of 92.

And freshman Stuti Mandal improved 22 strokes over her Oak Creek score a week earlier to post 100.

Rachel Watson carded a 108 to round out Irvine Valley's scores.

The team travels to Morro Bay for a two-day invitational tournamnet put on by Santa Barbara City College starting on Sunday.

"This is the site of the 2014 State Championship Tournament," said IVC coach Ben Burnett. "I asked the team to use Sunday's round to get used to the course and to develop a personal strategy.

"I told them that I would expect their Monday score to improve, if they continued to work on attacking each hole with a plan that utilizes course management and strategy."
