Women's golf team opens season at Desert Golf Tournament

Irvine Valley's women's golf team opened up the 2013 season with a fifth-place finish at the 11-team Desert Golf Tournament last weekend at the Indian Canyons Golf Course in Palm Springs.

Palomar won the tournament with a two-day team total of 602 strokes.

Santa Barbara City was second at 607, Saddleback took third at 610, College of the Desert was fourth at 615 and IVC came in fifth with 648 strokes.

The Lasers, who are the defending  state and Orange Empire Conference champions, shot 320 on the first day last Saturday and 328 on the second day last Sunday.

Irvine Valley, which features five new players this season, was paced by freshman Cindy Dang, who had a two-day total of 145. She shot 1-over par 74 on the opening day and 2-under par 71 on the second day.

Dang placed tied for fifth individually and was named to the all-tournament team. She was just two shots out of second place.

The medalist for the tournament was Palomar's Sadye Busby at 136.

Also turning in a solid score for Irvine Valley was freshman Leleaga Meredith, who finished at 147 (73-74). Meredith tied for ninth overall.

Freshman Nayoung Kim was IVC's third scorer, coming in at 168 (80-88) and freshman Kimberly Richardson was fourth for the Lasers at 188 (93-95).

Freshman Jennifer Richardson had IVC's throw-out score of 235 (123-112).

Irvine Valley plays again on Wednesday in the first Orange Empire Conference match of the season. The match will be hosted by College of the Desert at Santa Rosa Country Club in the Palm Springs area.​
