Alumni Report: Mary Dishoian earns hoops award at Westcliff

Former Irvine Valley two-year women's basketball player Mary Dishoian was recently named a Warrior Award recipient at Westcliff Univerity in Irvine.

Dishoian was one of two former Lasers, along with Patricia McClure on the Westcliff roster this past season.

Westcliff had a record of 12-19 overall during the 2019-20 year.

Dishoian was the starting point guard and led the team in assists.

The Westcliff women's basketball program is led by Kyle Rouse.

Westcliff's basketball program posted online about Dishoian, saying, "Not only was she a great captain, she brought her fearlessness and competitive attitude every day on and off the court.

"She led our team in all the right ways, vocally and by example while representing our 5 C's culture with high character and tremendous integrity.

Westcliff also announced that Dishoian would be joining the coaching staff this coming season.

Dishoian played her junior year at NCAA Division III University of La Verne before heading to Westcliff this past season.

At IVC, Dishoian was a two-year player and started a number of games.

A 5-8 guard, Dishoian helped IVC to a record of 26-5 overall during the 2017-18 campaign. IVC won a share of the Orange Empire Conference and made the program's second ever appearance in the California Community College Athletic Association State Championship tournament.

The team ended up ranked No. 8 in the final CCCSIA Top 20 State Poll of the year.

Dishoian started nine games and averaged 6.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game during the 2017-18 season at IVC. And she shot 55.8 percent from the field on the year.

She scored in double figures in seven contests and topped 20 points twice, including scoring an IVC career-best 25 points in Irvine Valley's 98-33 victory over Copper Mountain at home on Feb. 2, 2018.

She had a high of 14 rebounds in Irvine Valley's 100-49 win at Orange Coast on Jan. 19, 2018.

The former Marina High player also started nine games for the Lasers during the 2016-17 season and averaged 3.3 points and 2.1 rebounds per game.
