Men's volleyball team beats Palomar for second straight win

Irvine Valley's men's volleyball won its second straight match and improved its record to 5-3 overall with a four-set victory at Palomar on Thursday night.

The victory came a night after IVC swept at LA Pierce.

The Lasers, ranked No. 4 in the state in the first coaches poll of the season, improved their record to 4-1 against community college squads so far.

In IVC's 25-18, 25-23, 21-25, 25-15 victory over Palomar, sophomore outside hitter Sean Carroll and freshman right side Demetre Gossett each finished with 11 kills to lead the way.

Carroll also had four aces and four blocks and Gossette chipped in six aces and eight digs.

Freshman outside hitter Declan Holder added nine kills, six digs and four blocks and freshmen middle blockers Grant Marocchi and Tristan Belsby had five kills each.

Freshman setter Isaiah Powell ran the offense with 40 assists and also contributed five digs.

On the year, IVC is hitting .301 as a team and limiting opponents to .133.

Carroll is averaging 2.88 kills, Marocchi averages 2.37 kills, is hitting .407 and is averaging 1.26 blocks, Gossett is averaging 2.15 kills and 1.15 aces, Holder averages 1.88 kills, Jonathan Immanuel averages 1.35 digs and Powell is averaging 9.14 assists per set.  

Irvine Valley plays two home matches next week. The Lasers host Grossmont on Wednesday at 3 p.m. and then El Camino on Friday at 2 p.m.
