Men's volleyball team splits matches at Orange Coast Quad

Irvine Valley's men's volleyball team played well throughout the day at the annual Orange Coast Quad event on Saturday and came away with a split in its two matches.

The Lasers fell to Long Beach City in its first match of the day. The Lases took the first set, but then dropped the next three, 25-23, 20-25, 17-25, 17-25.

Freshman right side Demetre Gossett finished with 12 kills and three aces. Sophomore outside hitter Sean Carroll had 11 kills and four digs and freshman middle blocker Grant Marocchi addded five kills and nine blocks.

Freshman setter Isaiah Powell ended with 24 assists and two block assists.

IVC started strong, but hurt itself with hitting and serving errors. The Lasers hit just .152 as a team in the match and had 20 serving errors.

But the Lasers bounced back with a strong performance against Santa Monica in a match later in the day.

Irvine Valley hit an impressive .343 as a team.

Carroll finished with a .346 hitting percentage and a team-high 15 kills. Long Beach State signee Marocchi had 14 kills, hit .480 and had four block assists.

Freshman outside hitter Declan Holder had nine kills and two aces, Powell ended with 34 assists and four digs and freshman libero Jonathan Immanuel contributed 11 digs.

Irvine Valley, which now has a record of 2-1 overall, plays its first home matches of the season this week.

The Lasers host St. Katherine University on Wednesday at 6 p.m., host the Costa Mesa Stunners on Friday at 6 p.m. and host Westcliff University Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
