Men's volleyball team ranked No. 1 for fourth week in a row

There was little change at the top of the California Community College Men's Volleyball Coaches Association State Poll in week five.

The top three teams stayed the same for the third straight week with Irvine Valley remaining No. 1. Orange Coast came in at No. 2 and Santa Monica was third in the voting.

Irvine Valley, which is No. 1 for a fourth consecutive week, escaped with a five-set win over Grossmont last week in its only match.

IVC won, 15-12, in the final set. The Lasers overcame the Griffins hitting .461 as a team. Steven Rodriguez led a spirited Grossmont team with 29 kills. Brennan To (16 kills), Ruben Lopez (15 kills) and Matt August (14 kills and seven blocks) led a balanced Irvine Valley effort.

Orange Coast swept its fourth straight opponent, winning at San Diego Mesa, 25-22, 25-19, 25-16, last Friday. Jordan Hoppe had 10 kills and hit .533 for the Pirates.

Santa Monica swept at Moorpark last Friday, 27-25, 25-21, 25-15. Dane Pieper had 10 kills and Max Bell and Shane Stoklos each finished with eight kills for Santa Monica.

Golden West and Long Beach City each moved up a spot in this week's poll. Golden West has won four straight matches.

It beat San Diego Mesa in four sets at home last Wednesday and then swept on the road at Palomar Friday.

Kysen Olsen had 12 kills in 14 attempts for a .857 hitting percentage for Golden West in Friday's win.

Long Beach City has won two straight and three of its last four matches. The Vikings pulled out a five-set win at Pierce last Friday behind 18 kills by Cyrus Fa'alogo.
