Another Irvine Valley men's volleyball player has signed to continue his career at a four-year school.

Sophomore outside hitter Josh Schmidt is heading to play at UC San Diego.

Schmidt joins Cole Murray (Loyola) and Davis Cannon (Long Beach State) as Lasers that are moving on.

Schmidt, a 6-4 outside hitter, was a two-year player for the Lasers.

This past season, he played in 19 matches and averaged 1.89 kills and 0.85 digs per set.

He recorded double figure kills in three matches with a season-high 13 kills in irvine Valley's four-set win at Palomar on March 25. He also hit an impressive .458 in that match.

Schmidt had a season-best 10 digs to go along with seven kills, a .385 hitting percentage and two block assists in a four-set victory for IVC at Los Angeles Pierce on Feb. 13.

And he had six total blocks to go along with eight kills in Irvine Valley's five-set loss at Santa Barbara City on Feb. 11.

Schmidt helped Irvine Valley to a record of 13-6 in 2015. The Lasers made the State Championship playoff quarterfinals.

As a freshman during the 2014 season, he played in 18 matches and averaged 1.27 kills and 0.59 digs per match as Irvine Valley made the CCCAA State Championship semifinals.

Schmidt, who prepped at Capistrano Valley High, is headed to a UC San Diego program that plays Division 1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
