Men's volleyball team bounces back with sweep of Miramar

The Irvine Valley men's volleyball team bounced back from a disappointing five-set loss at Grossmont on Wednesday with a sweep of Miramar on Friday at home.

The Lasers beat Miramar, 25-15, 28-26, 25-20, in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference match.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 6-3 overall and 4-1 in conference.

Irvine Valley hurt itself with 17 serving errors in the match, but pulled through thanks to strong performances from sophomore outside hitter Cole Murray and Josh Schmidt and freshman middle blocker Robert Ryley.

Murray finished with 10 kills and five aces and Schmidt had seven kills.

Ryley added six kills. He and fellow middle blocker, sophomore Nate Kofman, combined to hit .615 on the night. Kofman finished with three kills.

Sophomore Arek Halaj and freshman Jake Adams split the setting duties. Halaj contributed 16 assists and Adams had 14 assists.

Irvine Valley cruised in the first set, but really had to battle in the next two sets.

Miramar, in its first year as a program, scored the first five points of the second set and later led, 8-2.

IVC came back with 11 of the next 15 points. IVC went ahead, 13-12 on an ace by freshman outside hitter Peter Van Liefde.

Neither team went ahead by more than two points the rest of the set and the match was tied 10 times.

Irvine Valley head set point at 24-23, but then hit a serve into the net.

Miramar had its one set point at 25-24, but Halaj came through with a kill for Irvine Valley to tie the set at 25-25.

Tied, 26-26, IVC scored the final two points.

Ryley had a kill and then Van Liefde finished the set off with a kill.

Irvine Valley trailed early in the third set, 8-5, but then scored eight of the next 12 points. It went ahead, 13-12 on an ace by Murray.

A solo block by Schmidt gave the Lasers a 15-13 lead.

IVC stretched its lead to 17-14 on an overpass kill by Schmidt.

Miramar came back to within 18-17, and later, 20-19, but the Lasers finished the match strong. They gave up just one point the rest of the way.

A kill by Ryley made it 21-19, and back-to-back aces by Murray got IVC to match point at 24-20.

Schmidt had another kill on an overpass to give Irvine Valley the win.

The Lasers play again next Wednesday at San Diego Mesa at 6 p.m. They are home next Friday against Golden West at 6 p.m.
