Irvine Valley's men's volleyball team looked solid in its second scrimmage match before the 2015 season starts next week.

The Lasers took on Long Beach City at home on Monday in the scrimmage.

The Lasers received contributions from all over. Sophomore outside hitter Cole Murray, sophomore opposite and setter Arek Halaj, freshman outside hitter Peter Van Liefde and sophomore outside hitter Josh Schmidt each contributed on offense.

Irvine Valley also got a productive night from sophomore middle blocker Matt Mittry, who was a force at the net, and sophomore libero Billy Crow, who was all over the court on defense.

"There were a lot of positives," Irvine Valley coach Ki Yi said. "We can still serve better, but we did a lot of good things at the net. We blocked and hit really well and our setting is continuing to improve.

"Matt Mittry had a really nice game and Billy does such a great job of keeping points alive."

Irvine Valley also played host to a scrimmage last week against Santa Monica and then took part in the Long Beach City scrimmage tournament last weekend.

"Long Beach City was missing their setter (out injured) and he was one of the best players we saw in the scrimmage tournament last weekend in Long Beach," Yi said. "So I know they were hurt by not having him.

"But overall, I liked what I saw from our guys. One thing I really like about this team is that it just continues to attack. We just keep coming at you. It can wear on teams after a while."

Irvine Valley will get a full week to continue to practice before officially starting the season. The Lasers are at El Camino on Wednesday, Feb. 4 in the 2015 opener.

"We just have to keep working on things, improving day in and day out and I think we will be OK," Yi said.
