Baseball team shut out in series finale at Cypress

Irvine Valley's baseball team dropped its third straight game to Cypress, losing, 3-0, on Friday in an Orange Empire Conference game at Cypress.

The Lasers, ranked No. 16 in Southern California, saw their record slip to 17-15 overall and 5-10 in conference. No. 9 Cypress improved to 21-10 overall and 8-7 in conference.

Henry Martinez (3-3) picked up his third victory of the season as he shut down the Lasers over 8 innings while allowing just six hits and striking out nine batters.

Jake Mahood relieved Martinez in the ninth inning and he earned his second save of the season.

Trevor Fonseca (2 for 3 with two RBI) and Chase Sebby (0 for 2 with one RBI) led the Chargers' offense.

Irvine Valley sophomore John Stevens (4-3) pitched well, but took the loss for the Lasers.

He went eight innings while allowing three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.

Cypress took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Sebby. And then in the bottom of the seventh, Fonseca knocked in two runs with a single.

Sophomore designated hitter Alec Ceniceros went 2 for 4 with a double and freshman first baseman Ryan Gaynor was 1 for 2 with a walk for IVC.

Irvine Valley returns to action next Tuesday at home with a nonconference game against LA Harbor at 2 p.m.
