Baseball team loses 2017 opener at Long Beach in tough fashion

Irvine Valley's baseball team looked to have its first win of the season wrapped up on opening day Friday at Long Beach City.

But the Vikings scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth to come away with a 7-6 victory over the Lasers.

Irvine Valley took a 6-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning with five runs.

Sophomore shortstop Tyler Odekirk hit a RBI triple left center to score freshman center fielder Nick Jacobson and tie the game, 2-2.

Sophomore designated hitter Robbie Espinosa then doubled down the left field line to knock in two runs and put IVC up, 4-2.

Sophomore right fielder Cole Joy then hit a two-run home run to left. IVC held a 6-2 advantage.

Long Beach City scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to get within 6-3.

And the Vikings earned the win in the bottom of the ninth with four runs on six hits and an IVC error.

Vincent Byrd II hit an infield single and after an IVC throwing error on the play, two runs in to score to end the game.

Odekirk went 2 for 4 with a walk, two runs, one RBI and two stolen bases, Espinosa was 2 for 5 with two runs and two RBI, sophomore first baseman Tyler Wagner went 2 for 4 with one RBI and Jacobson was 2 for 4 for Irvine Valley.

Sophomore Austin Reynolds started on the mound for IVC and went 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Sophomore John Stevens took the loss. He pitched 3.2 innings and gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts.

Irvine Valley plays Long Beach City again on Saturday. IVC hosts the game at 12 p.m.
