Baseball team bounces back with big win over Riverside

Irvine Valley's baseball team won the seasons series with Riverside, beating the Tigers, 9-4, in an Orange Empire Conference game on Tuesday at home.

Irvine Valley took two of three contests against Riverside with freshman left-handed pitcher Ryan Abady earning both victories.

The Lasers improved their record to 14-10 overall and 6-5 in conference, while Riverside slipped to 16-8 overall and 4-7 in conference.

IVC is in a tie for third place in the conference standings, two games behind Orange Coast for first place and a game in back of Cypress for second.

Irvine Valley hosts Cypress on Thursday at 2 p.m.

Abady went to 5-1 on the year. He pitched 6.1 innings and allowed four runs on five hits and two walks with one strikeout.

Abady was helped out by the IVC offense.

The Lasers bounced back from a tough time at the plate last Saturday at Riverside (just three hits) with 12 hits, including four for extra bases, and had six different players drive in runs on Tuesday.

After Riverside scored two runs in the top of the first inning on RBI singles by David Schuknecht and Brody Weiss, Irvine Valley came back with three runs in the bottom of the frame.

Seven hitters went to the plate in the inning for IVC. Freshman right fielder Trey Ryan started things off with a bunt single and then took second on a throwing error.

Sophomore center fielder Brett Hamilton reached on a fielder's choice after a bunt.

Freshman designated hitter Robbie Espinosa drove in IVC's first run with a single to center.

Freshman first baseman Lucas Tancas' and two proceeding Riverside throwing errors on the play scored Hamilton to make it a 2-2 game.

Freshman catcher Branden Williams then grounded out to bring in Espinosa and make it 3-2.

Irvine Valley added a run in the bottom of the second inning on a Ryan RBI single to left field. The hit brought in freshman shortstop Jordan Gillerman, who hit a lead-off double.

The Lasers then went up, 6-2, after scoring two runs in the bottom of the third.

Freshman left fielder Clint Jack hit a soft liner to right that went for an RBI triple and scored sophomore third baseman Adam Vargas, who doubled earlier in the inning.

And then Gillerman hit a sacrifice fly to score Jack.

Riverside came back with two runs in the top of the fourth to get within striking distance.

Austin Roberts drove in the two runs with a single up the middle. Riverside pulled within 6-4.

But Hamilton put the game away for Irvine Valley in the bottom of the sixth. He hit a three-run home run over the left field fence off of Riverside starting pitcher Angel Delgado to put Irvine Valley in front, 9-6.

Abady and freshman reliever Andrew Jimenez did the rest on the mound.

Jimenez pitched a scoreless final 2.2 innings. He allowed one hit and two walks and had one strikeout.

Ryan ended up going 3 for 4 with a walk, two runs scored, one RBI and a stolen base.

Espinoza was 2 for 4 with one RBI, Gillerman went 2 for 3 with one RBI and Hamilton was 1 for 4 with two runs scored and three RBI.

Riverside was limited to six hits on the afternoon.

Weiss went 2 for 4 with one RBI and Roberts was 1 for 3 with two RBI.

Delgado took the loss and fell to 5-3 overall. He pitched 5.1 innings and was charged with all nine runs (seven earned) on 11 hits and two walks with two strikeouts.
