Irvine Valley's baseball team scored five runs in the first inning and went on to beat Golden West, 7-3, in an Orange Empire Conference game on Thursday at home.
Irvine Valley improved its record to 10-7 overall and 2-2 in conference, while Golden West fell to 9-8 overall and 1-3 in conference.
The Lasers scored their five runs in the first on just one hit.
In an odd occurrence, the first five IVC batters up in the bottom of the first inning were hit by pitches by Golden West starter Ryan Kayoda.
Kayoda also threw two wild pitches.
All five IVC batters, freshman left fielder Clint Jack, freshman center fielder Dillon Millar, sophomore right fielder Brett Hamilton, freshman first baseman Lucas Tancas and freshman designated hitter Robbie Espinosa ended up scoring.
Kayoda was lifted after he hit his fifth batter, Espinosa, with the bases loaded.
It gave Irvine Valley a 2-0 lead.
Justin Moulds replaced Kayoda and threw a wild pitch that scored Hamilton and gave Irvine Valley a 3-0 lead.
Freshman catcher Branden Williams then singled through the left side to bring in Tancas and make it 4-0.
Later, with the bases loaded, freshman second baseman Joey Moscatiello walked with the bases loaded to make it a 5-0 game.
The five runs were all more than enough for Irvine Valley sophomore pitcher Justin Zielinski.
Zielinski did the rest. He improved his record to 4-0 with his second complete game of the season.
Zielinski ended up giving up three runs on 10 hits with one strikeout. He didn't allow a walk and still hasn't walked a batter in 47 innings pitched this year.
Golden West scored its first run off of Zielinski in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Jordan Lucio.
But Irvine Valley got the run back in the bottom half of the inning. Millar walked and later scored on another wild pitch.
Golden West added two runs in the top of the seventh inning on a hit batter and three hits to make it a 6-3 game.
Chris Williams and Lucio each had RBI singles in the inning for the Rustlers.
The Lasers scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth on a single, hit batter and error.
Sophomore third baseman Adam Vargas led Irvine Valley on offense by going 3 for 4 with a run scored.
Jack, Tancas and Espinosa each went 1 for 3 and Millar scored two runs for Irvine Valley.
The Lasers play again on Saturday, hosting defending state champion Orange Coast at 12 p.m.
