Baseball team comes up short in conference game at Cypress

Irvine Valley's baseball team lost at Cypress, 5-0, in an Orange Empire Conference game on Tuesday.

The Lasers' record slipped to 9-7 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

Cypress improved its record to 12-3 overall and 2-1 in conference.

IVC had its chances in the contest. Irvine Valley stranded 10 runners on the day.

IVC finished with six hits and had another four batters reach on walks.

The Lasers had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the first inning, but couldn't score.

Freshman first baseman Lucas Tancas went 2 for 3 with a double and a walk and sophomore third baseman Adam Vargas was 2 for 4 with a double for IVC.

Sophomore right fielder Brett Hamilton went 1 for 3 with a walk and freshman left fielder Clint Jack walked twice for IVC.

Cypress scored one run in the third inning and two more in the fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead.

The Chargers added two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning for the final score.

John Forsythe, Payton Smith, and Tyler Ornales combined to pitch the second shutout for the Chargers this season

Forsythe got the win, going 6.2 innings and giving up four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.

The Chargers were led by third baseman Grant Mayeau, who picked up two hits, one run, and three RBI.

Freshman Cole Millerd took the loss for IVC in his first start of the season for the Lasers.

He went 3.2 innings and allowed three runs on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

Freshmen Joseph Chacon, Hunter Robinson, Michael Torres, Andrew Jimenez and Tyler Miller all pitched in relief for Irvine Valley.

Chacon and Robinson each threw a scoreless 1.1 innings.

Irvine Valley plays its next two conference games at home. The Lasers host Golden West on Thursday at 2 p.m. and then Orange Coast on Saturday at 12 p.m.
