Baseball team drops first two games of year in San Diego

Irvine Valley's baseball team's two-game swing through San Diego county didn't go according to plan.

The Lasers weren't able to build on their four-game win streak to open the 2015 season.

Irvine Valley came out flat and lost at Imperial Valley, 7-3, on Friday and then dropped a tough 3-2 decision in extra innings on Saturday at San Diego City.

Imperial Valley led, 4-1, after five innings, but Irvine Valley got a run in the top of the sixth on two hits and an error by Imperial Valley and then another in the top of the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly by freshman center fielder Dillon Millar to pull within 4-3.

But Imperial Valley put three runs on the board in the bottom of the eighth inning to extend its lead.

IVC finished with just seven hits against Imperial Valley. Sophomore third baseman Adam Vargas went 2 for 4, Millar was 1 for 4 with two RBI and freshman designated hitter Trey Ryan was 1 for 4 with two runs scored.

Freshman Andrew Jimenez took the loss on the mound for IVC. He went 4.1 innings and gave up four runs (three earned) on five hits with one strikeout.

On Saturday, IVC was in a dogfight with San Diego City. The Lasers trailed, 2-1,  going into the top of the eighth inning, but scored a run to tie it on a sacrifice fly by freshman second baseman Cory Mendoza.

The game went to extra innings and in the bottom of the 10th, San Diego City designated hitter Christian Broussard hit a solo home run off of Irvine Valley freshman relief pitcher Cole Millerd to end the game.

Irvine Valley finished with 12 hits to eight by San Diego City.

Freshman first baseman Lucas Tancas went 3 for 4 with a walk, Mendoza was 2 for 4 with one RBI, Ryan was 2 for 5 and freshman left fielder Clint Jack went 1 for 4 with a walk and one RBI.

Freshman lefty Ryan Abady started on the mound and went 5.1 innings. He gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Freshman reliever Joseph Chacon followed and pitched 2.2 innings, allowing no runs, three hits and two walks.

"We learned a lot," IVC coach Kent Madole said. "We have a young team with a lot of freshman so we are still learning on the job.

"The morale is still good and the coaches are working hard. We are looking forward to this week."

Irvine Valley plays again on Tuesday back at home. The Lasers host Los Angeles Harbor at 2 p.m. LA Harbor has a record of 2-1 so far. It has beaten Imperial Valley twice and lost to Grossmont, 6-4, at Grossmont last Friday.
