eSports is coming to Irvine Valley in the fall of 2019

Get ready for the world of video-gaming at Irvine Valley College, popularly known as eSports.

The Lasers have their sights set on the launch of the first varsity team in California Community College history in the fall of 2019.

And Irvine Valley is seeking a founding head coach for the eSports squad to continue to move its gaming process forward.

The global audience for eSports is projected to grow from almost 400 million people in 2018 to 589 million by 2020, according to widely cited figures from Newzoo.

The successful candidate will be responsible for decisions on all aspects of the start-up phase for eSports and establishing IVC as a premier destination for college students seeking either a gaming career or transfer to one at a university eSports program.

"As more than 100 universities have capitalized on the explosive growth of eSports on a global level to create varsity teams on their campuses, IVC has been researching how best to serve our students as we enter an exciting new world in sports," Irvine Valley Dean, Athletic Director and IVC eSports architect Keith Shackleford said.

"As we launch what we believe is the first varsity eSports team among the California Community Colleges in the fall of 2019, our search for a founding head coach is at the very top of our priorities for the spring. With the full support of campus leadership, a visionary, motivated leader will allow our program at Irvine Valley to set the bar for all gaming programs to follow."
