Robert "Butch" May joined the Irvine Valley volleyball staff in the spring of 2014 by helping out with the women's sand program. May helped IVC win its second straight state club title.

And he was an assisant coach for the IVC women's sand team that won the inaugural CCCAA State Championships this past spring at Irvine Valley.

May is a legend in the volleyball world as not only a coach, but also a player.

He was part of the Santa Monica College national collegiate championship team in 1964. In 1964, May was also selected as an alternate on the U.S. men's Olympic team. He was on the 1968 Olympic team and was part of the U.S. national team program from 1965-1969.

May has competed in beach volleyball since 1963 and been playing indoor volleyball since 1962.

He is also the father of Misty May, who was a three-time Olympic gold medalist with Kerri Walsh.
