Women's volleyball team set to take on Tigers in OEC opener

Irvine Valley's women's volleyball team starts Orange Empire Conference play on Friday at home against Riverside.

Irvine Valley continued to battle, but dropped two matches at home last week, falling to MiraCosta on Wednesday, 25-14, 27-25, 23-25, 26-24, and then to Pasadena City, 25-16, 24-26, 25-23, 25-12 on Friday.

Freshman opposite Hailey Oldham led the Lasers with 19 kills and 11 digs against MiraCosta.

Sophomore outside hitter and libero Audrey Fowler ended with 29 digs, sophomore outside hitter Jayva Andersen chipped in 13 digs and freshman setter Emmi Scelzo contributed 42 assists.

Against PCC, Oldham finished with 16 kills and three blocks. Fowler had 27 digs and Scelzo contributed 32 assists and 10 digs.

On the season, Oldham is averaging 3.13 kills and 1.94 digs per set. Fowler averages 1.91 kills and 4.22 digs per set, sophomore outside hitter Alya Mersin averages 1.22 kills per set and Scelzo is averaging 7.41 assists and 2.06 digs per set. Freshman libero Kayla Torres leads the team in digs, averaging 3.17 digs per set.

IVC has a record of 0-8 overall.

Riverside defeated College of the Desert, 25-23, 25-15, 9-25, 25-14, Wednesday night at home to move its record to 6-4 overall. 

The Tigers were led by 15 kills and 11 digs from Kilyn Hayes.

Nicole Barrera and Jaeda Whitmire added 10 kills apiece in the win. Alyssa Bishop and Riley Chafee split setting duties with 17 and 15 assists, respectively.

On the year, Hayes averages 4.46 kills per set, Whitmire averages 2.27 kills per set, Bishop is averaging 5.06 assists per set and Tabatha Irish is averaging 3.55 digs per set for the Tigers.
