Volleyball team earns the No. 2 seed in the So. Cal. Playoffs

The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team earned the No. 2 seed in the California Community College Athletic Association Playoffs on Thursday and will open the postseason next Tuesday at home at 6 p.m. with an opponent to be determined.

IVC received a bye as being a top seed.

The Lasers will play the winner of a match between No. 15 Bakersfield and No. 18 El Camino. Those squads play in the opening round of the regionals on Saturday.

Irvine Valley, ranked No. 9 in the state, swept Santiago Canyon, 25-10, 25-12, 25-15, to end the regular season.

It was irvine Valley's ninth sweep in its last 10 matches and improved the team's record to 19-4 overall and 15-1 in conference.

Irvine Valley had already captured the Orange Empire Conference title, but solidified its place as one of the top seeds for the playoffs.

Sophomore outside hitter Angelina Griego and sophomore middle blocker Kendall Fraser led the way with nine kills each. Griego also had a team-best six digs.

Sophomore outside hitter Chloe Swanson and sophomore outsie hitter Emily Hon added five kills apiece and freshman middle blocker Avery Bennett contributed three kills and three blocks.

The Lasers hit .431 as a team.

Sophomore Alessandra Nitoglia ran the offense with 14 assists and sophomore Maddie Harkey added seven assists.
