Women's volleyball team rolls on special, sophomore night

The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team now awaits the California Community College Athletic Association So. Cal. Regional playoff pairings after another sweep on Tuesday in its regular-season finale.

And it was sophomore night for the Lasers.

Irvine Valley, ranked No. 9 in the state, swept Santiago Canyon, 25-10, 25-12, 25-15. It was irvine Valley's ninth sweep in its last 10 matches.

IVC improved its record to 19-4 overall and 15-1 in conference.

Irvine Valley had already captured the Orange Empire Conference title, but solidified its place as one of the top seeds for the So. Cal. playoffs.

On Tuesday, it was all about the sophomores.

Emily Hon, Elise Le, Maddie Harkey, Angelina Griego, Gabi Brown, Jayli Nealy, Kendall Fraser, Alessandra Nitoglia and Chloe Swanson were honored before the contest.

And then, Irvine Valley controlled the match from start to finish. 

Griego and Fraser led the way with nine kills each. Griego also had a team-best six digs.

Swanson and Hon added five kills each and freshman middle blocker Avery Bennett contributed three kills and three blocks.

The Lasers hit .431 as a team.

Nitoglia ran the offense with 14 assists and Harkey added seven assists.

The So. Cal. Regional playoffs will be announced on Thursday.
